Pakistan Envoy Claims India’s Afghanistan Policy Aims to Destabilize Islamabad at UNSC
June 2026 | By Azad News
WASHINGTON: Pakistan’s envoy to the United Nations said on Monday that India’s key objectives in Afghanistan were “solely driven by the singular goal of destabilising Pakistan”.
He made these remarks during a UN Security Council meeting on Afghanistan while responding to remarks by Afghanistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Nasir Ahmad Faiq.
Earlier in the session, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad detailed the use of Afghan soil by terrorists and its impact on Pakistan, calling for the Afghan Taliban to take action against militants. He also outlined Pakistan’s counter-terrorism measures.
Responding to criticism over Pakistan’s operations, Ambassador Ahmad said Pakistan’s actions, including those conducted in March, were directed solely against terrorist and military support infrastructure operating from Afghanistan, and not against the people of Afghanistan.
He reiterated Islamabad’s position that strikes targeted drone storage, technical support infrastructure, and ammunition sites allegedly being used for attacks inside Pakistan.
“The strikes were precise, deliberate and professional,” he said, adding that no civilian facility such as hospitals or rehabilitation centres were targeted.
The ambassador said three key expectations of the international community included inclusive governance, human rights, women and girls’ rights, and counterterrorism.
He noted that while most delegates raised concerns, India’s remarks stood out, accusing it of using the forum to target Pakistan under the guise of humanitarian assistance.
He claimed India’s objectives in Afghanistan were driven by the goal of destabilising Pakistan, including through alleged support for groups such as the TTP and BLA operating from Afghan territory.
The envoy further alleged that India supported and financed elements such as the BLA, referred to as “Fitna al Hindustan,” and accused it of using proxy networks to target Pakistan.
He also criticized India’s policies and said its conduct raised concerns for international peace and security.
The ambassador said Pakistan would continue to defend its sovereignty and national security against any threats.
UNSC Demand on Afghanistan
Earlier, Ambassador Ahmad told the Security Council that Pakistan’s demand from the Afghan Taliban was simple: “verifiable and non-reversible action” against terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory.
He said this demand remains unmet and warned that the window for corrective action is narrowing but still open.
He urged the Taliban to cooperate with the international community for long-term peace and stability in Afghanistan.
The envoy highlighted that Pakistan has suffered a surge in terrorism since 2021 and has repeatedly urged Kabul to dismantle militant sanctuaries.
He also cited reports of continued terrorist activity originating from Afghan territory and its impact on Pakistan’s security situation.
According to him, Pakistan has suffered thousands of terrorist incidents and significant human losses in recent years.
He reiterated that Pakistan remains open to dialogue and has engaged in diplomatic efforts with regional partners to stabilize the situation.
Conclusion
The ambassador concluded that Pakistan seeks peace in the region but will continue to defend itself against threats to its sovereignty and security while urging international action against terrorism originating from Afghanistan.
